Take a look at some headshots on LinkedIn, or even just do a Google search. Instead of quickly focusing on the person, see what’s going on in the background.

So many photographers, and especially inexperienced ones, let background distractions happen. You don’t want them because they take attention off of you, and put it on something else. If you’re in business, you know how hard it is to get and keep attention from your target market.

Another problem that happens is a client may insist on a certain headshot where everything looks good, except the background. If you hear your photographer advise against using a certain location for a shot, take it.

Here’s some common background mistakes you can see in corporate headshots:

  1. A “Blah” Background

Know the boring gray and blue backgrounds that you see on so many headshots? You can use them. But, here’s the thing: they do nothing to stand out.

And in business, the last thing you want to do is to blend in. So, you have to do that in  a way that’s appropriate for the customer you want to attract. Why not a headshot in your office in front of a window where your viewer can see the city skyline?

  1. Standing in Front of a Light Post

Have you ever seen these headshots? They do happen. Standing in front of a light post makes it look like the light post is coming out of your head. It’s tempting to think this will be more intimate and relaxed, but it ends up being awkward.

You may not even consider doing this type of headshot, but it does happen.

  1. Competing Lines

Say you have well-defined lines in your face. Now, say the background behind you has its own set of lines. Seems like no big deal – until you look at the photo.

The contrast between the sets of lines makes things look quite busy. It distracts the viewer. Instead of focusing on your personality, they focus on all the commotion instead. And that can cost you business.

Those 3 background mistakes can greatly harm the power of your corporate headshot. Make sure your photographer knows to avoid them, and that you don’t choose to use a headshot with any of those distractions.
